Today is the first day of the Chinese Lunar Calendar, the year of the Dragon, where Chinese New Year (CNY) is celebrated by the Chinese community. The tradition of this most important annual festival is to reconcile, forget all grudges and sincerely wish peace and happiness for everyone.. Each year is named after one of the 12 animals according to the Chinese Zodiac. The celebration customs varies in different regions of ChiNa.
Debts are settled, prayers and offerings are made. New clothes are bought and plenty of food are prepared. Houses will be decorated with red colour paper cut outs of ‘good fortune’, ‘happiness’, ‘wealth’ or ‘longevity’. On the even of CNY, family members from far and near will return for reunion dinner and the night will end with firecrackers to usher in the New Year. Early the next morning, children will greet their parents by wishing them a healthy and happy new year, and receive money in red packets (ang pow). The main celebration is on the first 3 days with visiting relatives and friends, and the CNY celebration ends on the 15th day of the month.
A Prosperous & Happy Chinese New Year to all!
May you and your family be blessed with vibrant health, great wealth and abundant happiness in the Year of the Dragon.
